Connect the Freika terminal to the checkout

This is how you connect a Freika payment terminal (e.g. the Freika PAX IM30) to your scango.ch checkout terminal. There are two ways: local, where the checkout talks to the terminal directly over your shop's network, or via the Freika cloud, where scango.ch drives the terminal over the internet through your Freika account.

We set up this connection for you at the start, before the hardware is shipped. You only need this guide if something changes during operation, e.g. when a payment terminal is replaced, gets a new address in the network or you switch the type of connection.

Local or cloud?

Connection

How it works

Good to know

Freika terminal (local)

The terminal and the checkout are in the same network. The checkout addresses the terminal directly by its IP address.

Fastest connection. Also works while the network's internet connection is interrupted.

Freika terminal (cloud)

The checkout drives the terminal over the internet and the Freika cloud, through your organization's Freika account.

The terminal may be in a different network. The checkout and the terminal need the internet.

Preparation

  • The Freika payment terminal and the scango.ch checkout terminal are connected to power and the internet, and the scango.ch app on the checkout terminal is started.
  • You are signed in to the scango.ch dashboard as an Admin or Owner. Only these roles can set up a checkout's payments.
  • For the cloud connection you have access to the Freika dashboard of your Freika account.

1. Open the checkout's payments

  1. In the dashboard, open Settings, then Organization and the Devices sub-page on the left.
  2. In your checkout's row, click the card icon ("Set up payments for …"). The Payments window opens.
  3. Click Add connection and choose Freika terminal (local) or Freika terminal (cloud).

For each type of connection, the window shows the steps again in short.

2a. Connect locally

  1. Connect the payment terminal to the same network as the checkout (LAN or Wi-Fi). Ideally give the terminal a fixed address in the router so that it does not change.
  2. In the Find the terminal in the network box, click Search the network. The search runs on the checkout itself, because only the checkout can reach your shop's network: it picks the request up within a minute, the search then takes a few seconds.
  3. The terminals found are listed with address and port, model, terminal number, merchant name and serial number. Click the right terminal (Use). This fills in the IP address, port and terminal number.
  4. If you like, enter a name under Name (optional), e.g. "terminal at the entrance". This helps if you store several terminals.
  5. Click Add and then Save. The checkout uses the terminal from its next sync.

You can also enter the details by hand: read the IP address on the terminal (Settings → Network) and enter it under Terminal IP address, only the address, without "http://" and without a port. Leave the Port at 50000 (default). The Terminal number (optional) is shown on the terminal or in the Freika account.

The search needs a checkout that is switched on and online. If the window shows "The device is offline", switch the checkout on and connect it to the network. If it says "The app on this device cannot search yet", enter the address by hand or contact support for an app update.

2b. Connect via the Freika cloud

  1. Connect your Freika account (needed only once per organization): create an API key in the Freika dashboard under "Developers". Enter it in the Payments window under Freika API key and click Connect. The key starts with "fk_live_" or "fk_test_". It is stored securely on the server and never shown again; the window then shows "Freika account connected" with the last four characters of the key.
  2. Under Terminal, choose the terminal that belongs to this checkout. The list shows the terminals of your Freika account with name, model and serial number. The terminal must be switched on and connected to the internet.
  3. If you like, enter a Name (optional). Without a name of your own, scango.ch uses the terminal's name from the Freika account.
  4. Click Add and then Save. The checkout uses the terminal from its next sync.

With a test key ("fk_test_") no real money moves; test terminals are marked "test" in the list. For live operation you need a live key.

Disconnect deletes the API key again. After that, every checkout of your organization with a Freika cloud terminal can no longer take card payments until you enter a key again.

3. Several terminals and switching

You can store several connections per checkout and switch quickly if one has a problem:

  • The connection the checkout's card button uses is marked In use, other configured connections Ready.
  • Use for card payments sets which connection the checkout takes.
  • The switch enables or disables a connection, Edit and Remove change it.

The changes only apply once you click Save.

4. Without internet

In the Payments window, under Without internet, you set what the checkout does when it is offline (When the kiosk is offline):

  • Use the store's setting: what the store has set for zahls.ch offline applies.
  • Show the zahls.ch QR code: the checkout shows the store's QR code instead of the terminal. zahls.ch must be set up for the store.
  • No card payment: without internet the checkout offers no card payment.

A local terminal stays usable without internet, unless you chose "Show the zahls.ch QR code". A cloud terminal always needs the internet.

5. Test

Test the connection with a short purchase: scan a product and tap "Pay CHF … with card / TWINT". The payment terminal must activate.

Find Freika terminals at the checkout

You can also start the search directly at the checkout, e.g. to check whether the checkout finds the terminal in the network and which terminal it is using:

  1. On the checkout's cart screen, tap the title at the top ("Your Shopping") 5 times within 3 seconds.
  2. In the Admin PIN window, enter your store's four-digit PIN and confirm with OK. If you don't know the PIN, contact support@scango.ch.
  3. In the Administration menu, tap Find Freika terminals. The search starts right away and shows how many addresses have been checked.
  4. Every terminal found is listed with address and port, Model, Terminal number, Serial number, Merchant and Software. The terminal the checkout uses is marked "Used by this till".
  5. Search again repeats the search, Close leaves the menu.

The checkout only asks each terminal for its details: nothing is charged and nothing appears on the terminal. Which terminal the checkout uses is set in the dashboard (see above). The labels follow the checkout's device language (e.g. "Freika-Terminals suchen" in German).

Something not working?

  • Both devices are connected to power and all cables are plugged in correctly.
  • The internet connection is working (modem running, access via another device possible). Note: If your network has a firewall or internet access is otherwise restricted, check that the checkout terminal and the payment terminal are allowed on the network.
  • If the search reports "No terminal found", check that the terminal is switched on and in the same network as the checkout, and that the till interface (LTI) is active on port 50000.
  • If a result says "Port open, but no answer as a terminal", the terminal is busy right now or it is another device. Search again later.
  • If the terminal's address has changed, search for it again and use the new address. A fixed address in the router prevents this.
  • If the dashboard reports "Freika rejected the key", check that the API key is complete and still valid.
  • If Terminal says that the stored terminal no longer exists in the Freika account, choose the new terminal from the list and save.

Still not working?

  • Send an email to support@scango.ch.
  • Describe as precisely as possible what is not working and send pictures if possible. Only precise error descriptions can be processed efficiently.
  • Leave the devices connected to power and the internet so that remote maintenance access is possible.

Frequently asked questions

Should I connect locally or via the cloud?

If the terminal is in the same network as the checkout, the local connection is the fastest and also works during an internet outage. The cloud connection suits you if the terminal and the checkout are not in the same network.

Do I have to enter the Freika API key for every checkout?

No. The key applies to the whole organization. After that you only choose each checkout's terminal from the list.

Can I choose a terminal at the checkout?

No. At the checkout you only see which terminals it finds and which one it uses. Which terminal it takes for card payments is set in the dashboard under Devices.

For more on setting up the devices, see Hardware. For a PayTec terminal, see Connect the PayTec terminal to the checkout.
